Within City Limits
“The landscapes I have in mind are not part of the unseen world in a psychic sense, nor are they part of the Unconscious. They belong to the world that lies visibly, about us. They are unseen merely because they are not perceived.” - Paul Nash, ‘Unseen Landscapes’, Country Life, May 1938
Within City Limits is a collection of photographs made between 2017-2020 that focus specifically on immersive nature within the formal city limits of Richmond, Virginia. The project began with making tintypes and glass negatives and later incorporated large format lith film. The project documents publicly accessible nature within this urban environment and looks at the ways access can impact community, wellbeing and sustain the human spirit. It features many landscapes along the James River, an important waterway in the region that has undergone significant rehabilitation efforts in recent years.
